Noelle Hanuse, Wellness Coordinator is offering healing-centered engagement workshops for anyone working with Indigenous students at VIU.

Indigenous students have identified a need for holistic pedagogical approaches as integral to their success, and this workshop explores historic and ongoing colonial and intergenerational trauma and how the impacts of these traumas can be lessened in the classroom.

Semélshun Aboriginal Graduation Recognition Ceremony

Do you know an Indigenous student who is graduating from VIU in January? If so, they are invited to Semélshun Aboriginal Graduation Recognition Ceremony set for December 11, 2020 at 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Zoom and should contact Kim.Warkentine@VIU.ca to participate. If you would  like to attend please RSVP to Kim for further information.

 

Semélshun is a Hul’q’umi’num’ word for “clearing a path” or “paving the way”.

Kwak waka' wakw Protocol Session

This introductory session will be facilitated by Kwakwakwuk Elder Maxine Matilpi (Lakwa).  Maxine will provide an understanding of Kwakwakwuk protocols, history and an understanding of acknowledging respect for the traditional territory of the north part of Vancouver Island.  Maxine works on the Nanaimo Campus.

Metis Protocol

This introductory session will be facilitated by Metis Elder Stella Johnson.  Stella will provide an understanding and awareness of Metis history on Vancouver Island.  Stella works on the Nanaimo Campus.

This introductory session will be facilitated by Nuu-chah-nulth Elder Barney Williams (Klith-wii-taa).  Barney will provide an understanding of Nuu-chah-nulth protocol, history and an understanding of acknowledging respect for the traditional territory of the West Coast of Vancouver Island.  Barney works on the Nanaimo Campus.
