VIU has a long history of building strong relationships with students and communities across the region and beyond. Our campuses are located on the traditional lands of the Snuneymuxw, Quw’utsun, ɬaʔamɩn, Snaw-Naw-As and Kwalicum First Nations.
Indigenous students make up 11% of VIU’s student body—the second highest in the province. We are committed to providing relevant programming and supports for Indigenous learners through feedback from their communities.
VIU’s strategic plan, People, Place, Potential, emphasizes ongoing learning with students, alumni, employees, communities and Indigenous partners. We are dedicated to being a responsive partner and creating supportive environments for Indigenous learners in alignment with:
- the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action
- recommendations in First Nations Control of First Nations Education
- United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
