VIU has worked closely with communities for decades to co-create and co-deliver community-led programs. This includes Relational Land-based Learning and on-campus programming.

Indigenous Ecotourism Training Program
The seven-month Indigenous Ecotourism Training Program gives you certified skills for employment within British Columbia’s rapidly growing Indigenous Tourism sector. You get an applied learning experience and a Certificate in Adventure Tourism and Recreation when you successfully complete all the courses. Participants are brought together for 6 to10 days a month to complete course work.

First Nations Stewardship Technicians Training Program - Coastal First Nations
Serving the First Nations on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii, including Wuikinuxv, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai’xais, Nuxalk, Gitga’at, Metlakatla, Old Masset, Skidegate, and Council of the Haida Nation.
The First Nations Stewardship Technicians Training Program has gives you the applied skills and knowledge required to work for your Nation in the growing field of resource stewardship or to broaden your skills and expertise in your current job. Potential employment opportunities include
- Coastal Guardian Watchman
- fisheries technician
- heritage surveyor
- environmental monitor
This training provides university credits you can be apply toward further studies, as well as industry-recognized certificates applicable to many career paths.
